Maya Maya's experience includes studying Temple Dance of South India (Bharatanatyam) intensely for several years. Her classes are open to all people and no prior dance experience is necessary to attend. Attendees are not obligated to perform either because the main goal of Gypsy Baladi is to promote health, well-being, and learn culture and ethno-historical forms of entertainment and fun. |
Maya Maya, director of the dance troupe Gypsy Baladi, has been dancing for 18 years. She moved to Columbia, MO from the West Coast where she studied the classical cabaret form of belly dance as well as Gypsy and American Tribal Style. She has traveled around the world and performed throughout the United States. The Gypsy Baladi dancers learn and perform choreography and dance steps that are a combination of different cultures and backgrounds — as Gypsies are known to integrate artistic influences from the cultures of the areas they have traveled. Accordingly, live music is an important part of Gypsy Baladi's performances. Maya also teaches finger cymbol patterns and traditional rhythms in her dance classes and has been known to play and sometimes teach Tabla or Middle Eastern drum.
