Belly Dance United or BDU was founded in 2003 in Columbia, Missouri. BDU was originally formed to provide innovative dance opportunities for bellydancers in Columbia. Since then, it has expanded to include twenty bellydance performers from around the Midwest as well as their related troupes and musicians.

BDU produces innovative US-style bellydance shows breaking away from what is considered "traditional" bellydance by incorporating comedy, acting, modern dance and other ancient dance traditions. Although innovation is key to the success of BDU, BDU always maintains a deep respect for the roots of bellydance or raks sharki and its ancient lineage. With that in mind, each performer is expected to have a complex understanding of the technique and historical background from its many countries of origin.

The audience generally gains a greater understanding of why bellydance is beneficial on many levels and where this ancient dance originates from.

BDU performers are chosen by audition by the director at the end of each year according to how many slots are available. If you are interested in auditioning for an opening, please email bdu@bellydanceunited.com for more information or see this website in Dec.

Members are chosen based on their advanced demonstration of Middle Eastern dance technique, ability to create professional and entertaining performances, ability to follow direction from the director, a positive attitude, ability to meet the requirements of BDU productions, and lastly, ability to adapt and be creative!

BDU's Mission Statement: Belly Dance United seeks to produce innovative performance opportunities that promote and encourage the talent of individuals within the bellydance community while simultaneously seeking to increase awareness and appreciation of bellydance in the world at large.
